John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
In the creation account in the book of Genesis, we see that God waited until he had perfectly prepared everything before creating Man. God was so thorough in his provision, that he provided for Adam, something he didn’t even know he needed, a wife. From Adam’s point of view, there was no such thing as a wife, because God had never created it, and he didn’t know he needed it. The two of them enjoyed 5-Star accommodations from day one.
That is an excellent picture of God’s Grace. Adam and Eve lived daily enjoying the pleasures of the garden and each other knowing that they were well taken care of. But we know the story, and eventually by the choice of Adam, man fell and Eden was lost. A curse was spoken over Adam; Genesis 3:19a In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread. In fact, pretty much everything after that, man has been working for it ever since.
Now something very interesting happens when God pulls the Hebrews out from Egypt. God feeds the Children of Israel, not by the sweat of their faces according to the curse, but rather by raining down manna from heaven. This is a prophetic gesture pointing to the Messiah, as many thousands of years later, Jesus Christ says this about himself; I am the bread of life.
We see the first bread is achieved under the curse of Adam, by works, the second bread, God has already provided and we partake by trusting Him. The Bread is symbolic of Life, and how we are going to live. Are we going to live by our efforts, or are we going to live by trusting in what Jesus has provided for us, because of what He has done?
Are we going to try and get forgiveness by our confessions, or are we going to trust in the Blood and believe we are already forgiven? Are we going to try and keep the law for our Righteousness, or are we going to trust in His Righteousness in our lives? Are we going to try and get free from sin by changing our lifestyles, or are we going to believe that we are already dead to sin and slaves to righteousness by nature?
Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God [Jesus, the living bread].
